Prayer for Las Vegas

By: Reality SF

At our Sunday gatherings on October 8th, we mourned the October 1st shooting in Las Vegas. Using our Prayers of the People liturgy, we prayed for those who were lost and those who are still fighting for their lives. You can watch the video of our communal experience here or read the prayer below:

Father, hear our grief. We mourn the 59 lives taken from us – those made in Your image, created and beloved by You.
Lord, have mercy.

We grieve for mothers, fathers, sons, daughters, significant others, and friends who have lost loved ones – who are experiencing the worst week of their lives. Be near to them.
Lord, have mercy.

We grieve for the family and friends of the shooter. Be with them in their shock, in their shame, and in their broken hearts as they reflect and grieve.
Lord, have mercy.

Hear our anger. Hear our discouragement. Hear our frustration, and our refusal to get used to this kind of evil, or to accept that these things are normal.
Lord, have mercy.

We grieve for the depth of evil and darkness in our world which would lead a person to commit such a heinous act. Banish this evil from our world and from our hearts.
Lord, have mercy.

Give us wisdom in how to help in practical ways. Fill us with passion as we partner with You in action to heal our country of its hatred and violence.
Lord, have mercy.

Be with us as we do our part. Make us quick to listen and slow to speak. Give us self-control, and help us not to create more hurt with our conversation in this time.
Lord, have mercy.

Empower Your church around the world ministering to the families and friends of those who have lost loved ones – equip us to be Your presence, now. Show us Your heart, and make us like You.
Lord, have mercy.

Empower and anoint your Church in Las Vegas to sit with, listen to, care for, and minister to all who are hurting.
Lord, have mercy.

Be with those who are fighting for their lives as we speak. Bind up their wounds. Heal their bodies. Restore every broken thing. We ask that the death toll would stop rising.
Lord, have mercy.

Be with the caregivers and first-responders and medical staff and hospitals – renew their energy. Give them clear minds to administer healing and care to those who are suffering.
Lord, have mercy.

Multiply the resources of those medical centers – like you did with the loaves and fishes – that no hospital would be without the supplies they need to treat the wounded.
Lord, have mercy.

We pray for the leaders of our nation and the leaders in Las Vegas. Give them caring hearts and determination to work toward policies that restrain and prevent this kind of terrorism in our nation and world.
Lord, have mercy.

Raise up for our nation leaders who are examples to us – those that are reliant on your strength and aware of their own limits. Guide them in their actions, that they would show the world what it looks like to be dependent on You.
Lord, have mercy.

You are the the great and mighty Protector and Judge who sees all and will make all things right. Help us to trust in You.
Lord, have mercy.
