It goes without saying that sharing a meal is a great way to get to know people, not only for the first time, but for the fiftieth time. Food provides natural triangulation, which makes starting a conversation with someone much easier. Meals are a biblical way of showing unity. And the sign of the new covenent was given in the context of sharing a meal–Jesus breaking bread with the disciples.
As Reality SF continues to grow, we’re going to have more new visitors to meet and get to know. God designed us for fellowship. Acting on this, we want to provide opportunities for people to meet, connections to be made, and friendships fostered in the context of building a church.
For this purpose, we formed lunch groups called Eatups; created to share food and fellowship after each church service–usually at a nearby restaurant. A goal with Eatups is to provide a welcoming entryway for a new visitor or a regular to join our community on any particular Sunday. It’s spontaneous, it’s frequent, and it’s part of everyone’s daily routine. We believe God can use these opportunities, however fleeting, in doing the work of welcoming someone in Christ’s name. We trust that, in Christ, these connections can go beyond what we ask or imagine them to be.
