04.28.21 | Joy in Repentance

In today’s BREAD reading from 2 Corinthians 7, Paul shares his joy to the church in Corinth regarding their repentance. This is preceded by Paul’s admonitions and references to God’s promises, in chapter 6. He brings a stern warning that idolatry, being unequally yoked with unbelievers, and trying to live a life not wholly set apart to God corrupts their capacity to experience the Father’s love. Paul then reminds the church in Corinth that God Himself promises to live in them if they repent (2 Cor. 6:14-18).

Paul acknowledges that it was painful for the church to receive his letter of correction, even to the point of great sorrow. He then encourages them that a godly sorrow leads to life through repentance, and expresses his joy, pride, and confidence in the Corinthians for their obedience and response to correction (verses 8-16).

During today’s fasting and prayer focus, ask the Lord to show you where areas of idolatry and corruption are keeping you from experiencing His love.  As these come to mind, ask for forgiveness. If you experience sorrow during this time of honest reflection, remember that this godly sorrow leads to repentance.

To end, spend time reflecting on the Father’s love, and let His great delight wash over you, remembering that your repentance is met with His promise to fill you with the Holy Spirit.

As always, we encourage you to share with another brother or sister how the Lord has met you in your repentance. Sharing the testimony of God’s grace in your life brings great joy and encouragement to others.
