06.02.21 | The Law of Love

In today’s BREAD reading from Romans 13, Paul writes that love is the fulfillment of the law (verses 8-10). This encouragement is founded on Jesus’ words in Matthew 22:36-40, where an expert of the law comes to Jesus and asks,

“Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”

During today’s fasting and prayer focus, spend time in communion with God. Tell the Lord why you love Him, what His love means to you, and how much you need His love. Reflect on what God has done in your life, and how He has demonstrated His great love for you. Ask the Lord what He wants you to know about His love.

For the remainder of the day, ask the Lord to bring to mind specific people in your life who need to hear that you love them. Remember – God’s love extends far beyond our imagination; Jesus even tells us that we are to love our enemies. So as you listen for Jesus to put specific people on your heart, take time to journal what you hear, and pray for those who come to mind. Then, reach out to these people today and express your love to them.
