07.21.21 | Resisting Temptation

In today’s BREAD reading from Matthew 4, Jesus is led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. Using scripture to frame these temptations, Satan tries to convince Jesus to meet his own needs for sustenance, to test God’s protection over him, and even offers Jesus power and prestige in return for bowing down and worshipping him.

Jesus utilizes his own knowledge of the Scriptures and their true meaning to resist each temptation presented to him. Jesus knows that his identity is found in being the Son of God, and his strength to resist temptation comes from the Father’s delight in him (Matthew 3:17).

We all experience temptation in our lives, and during today’s fasting and prayer focus, we will bring these temptations before the Lord. Whether you are already aware of temptation in your life or not, ask the Lord to bring to mind any that may be going unnoticed.

Lift your heart to the Lord, and listen for the Father’s voice speaking these words over you: “You are my son/daughter, in whom I take delight.”

God’s love for us, His joy and delight in being in relationship with us, encourages and strengthens us against temptations. We were never intended to face temptation alone or apart from the Father’s love. This week, we encourage you to share with a brother or sister how the Lord has been strengthening you.

Please note: If you are struggling significantly with a temptation in your life, we encourage you to share with a trusted brother or sister in your community. Ask them to pray with you that the Lord would strengthen you to turn to Him and resist all temptation.

If you are in need of someone to connect with or would like further support, we encourage you to email us at info@realitysf.com.
