09.15.21 | Heavenly Wisdom

In today’s BREAD reading from James 3, the author writes about two kinds of wisdom: the earthly wisdom and the heavenly wisdom.

He describes earthly wisdom in this way:

“But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. Such ‘wisdom’ does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic” (v. 13-14).

And he describes heavenly wisdom as:

“The wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. Peacemakers who sow in peace reap a harvest of righteousness” (v. 17-18).

For today’s Fasting & Prayer Focus, we will concentrate on gaining heavenly wisdom, and submitting our thoughts to the wisdom of God.

We will begin with a time of appreciating Jesus. Speak aloud your appreciation for him, recalling the ways he has shown up in your life, the promises he has made, and the blessings he has given to you. You can also sing a song of worship or read a psalm to help in expressing your appreciation for Jesus.

Next, spend time asking yourself what situation or circumstance in your life, or those near to you, may need clarity with the wisdom from heaven. Spend time in silence and listen to God; then journal about what you hear.

Lastly, pray to receive God’s wisdom for the situation or circumstance that comes to mind. Bring it before God and ask Him, “What do you want me to know about this?” Consider what a pure, peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy, and good fruit approach to the situation or circumstance could look like. Ask the Lord to guide you in His wisdom.

As always, we encourage you to share what you are learning with a brother or sister in Christ. This week, consider sharing what you are hearing regarding the situation or circumstance, and seek wisdom through prayer together.
