11.17.21 | What is Truth?

In today’s BREAD reading from John 18, we read of Judas’ betrayal of Jesus, Peter’s denial of Jesus, and Jesus being questioned by Pilate. In Jesus’ interaction with Pilate we read this:

“You are a king, then!” said Pilate. Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. In fact, the reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.”
“What is truth?” retorted Pilate. With this he went out again to the Jews gathered there and said, “I find no basis for a charge against him.” [John 18:37-38]

Here we observe an exchange between Jesus and Pilate about what truth is. Similarly, in last week’s bread reading from John 14, we read Jesus claiming for himself that “I am the way and the truth and the life” (John 14:6). Jesus not only claims that he testifies to the truth, but that he is the truth.

It is natural that we often find ourselves identifying with Pilate in this passage, asking the question “What is truth?” So, during today’s time of fasting and prayer, we will focus on seeking the truth in Jesus.

Begin by spending time in appreciation and adoration for Jesus. Praise him for who he is, what he has done, and what he is doing in your life.

Next, ask Jesus, “In what areas of my life do you want me to know your truth?” And spend time in silence, listening for his voice.

Consider everything that comes to mind while you are listening for Jesus’ voice, and journal about what you are hearing. Keep John 8:31-32 in mind: “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

As always, we encourage you to connect with another brother or sister, and share what you are hearing and learning. Consider:
