The Reality Logo,
Explained
When we sought to create a new website and rebrand our church’s visual identity, we considered the possibility of creating a logo/mark for our church.
We wanted this logo/mark to reflect our shared identity, mission, and vision as a church.
Identity: We are a community of people who have been transformed by the Gospel of Jesus and have devoted our lives to following Him.
Mission: To make disciples of all nations, teaching them to obey everything Jesus has commanded.
Vision: We are a community following Jesus, seeking renewal in our city.
As a church with its mission and vision focused on the city of San Francisco, we liked the idea of our logo/mark reflecting that. Mackey Saturday, the designer working on the project, connected this urban focus with the visual of a city intersection:
Then he simplified this city intersection concept into four squares:
He then pushed this shape into a logo/mark that would have more meaning, as described below:
What we loved about this mark is that it symbolized four important things about our identity, vision, and mission as a church.
- A city intersection, capturing our focus and calling to the city of San Francisco.
- Arrows facing inward, communicating that we are first a community who desires to live authentically with one another by speaking the truth to one another, serving one another, bearing one another’s burdens, and building one another up in love. For more on this, watch or listen to our teaching series “One Another.”
- Arrows facing outward, demonstrating our commitment to seek renewal in our city spiritually, relationally, socially, and culturally.
- A subtle cross in the negative space at the center, symbolizing that we are a cruciform community, seeking to take up our crosses and follow Jesus in self-sacrificial love. For more on this, watch or listen to the teachings “A Community of Cruciformity” and “A Community of Cruciformity Part 2.”
Our hope in sharing the meaning of our new logo is that it regularly reminds you of who we are as a church and what we’re seeking together.
